Cwesi Oteng wonders why Nathaniel Bassey’s “sing in English” words are still being debated by critics.

Hermon Cyrus Kwesi Nhyira Oteng, better known as Cwesu Oteng, is a Ghanaian gospel musician. He aims at critics, questioning why they even mention the popular Nigerian gospel musician Nathaniel Bassey’s remarks regarding writing more songs in English rather than the native tongue.

Nathaniel suggested Ghanaian gospel performers sing in English during the Jesus Christ Encounter event on December 2, 2023, at the Accra Sports Stadium, with the idea that doing so would enable them to perform for a larger audience.

However, many people responded negatively to his remarks on social media. Some people argued that they were losing their cultural identity, while others agreed with Bassey and said that the songs would have a greater worldwide impact if they were in English.

GX GH noticed a post on Cwesi Oteng’s X handle in which he declared his complete support for Bassey’s remarks. He claimed that although Bassey had gained international fame and shared his secret with everyone, naysayers were stirring up controversy.

Then, Cwesi Oteng exhorted all Ghanaian gospel performers to pay attention to and emulate Nathaniel Bassey.
